Katie and Josh
Q. Where did you move from and how did you end up in Middleton's Woodstone neighborhood?
A. We lived in a condo on Greenway Boulevard in Middleton. We have always enjoyed Middleton, but as our family grew, the condo – and the space to play with our kids – seemed to shrink! Woodstone offered the ability to stay in the area we had come to love while allowing us to expand.
Q. How do you spend time with your family around the area?
A. We have two young kids – Jackson, 4 and Audrey, 1.5, so we take advantage of the many perks the area has to offer – the zoo, farmers market, parks and trails – to keep them active and learning. Josh and I are avid Badger fans and try to catch a football game or two in the fall. We also enjoy all kinds of food and drink; a favorite evening for us is a beer and some live music at Capital Brewery.
Q. Could you explain what it is about the neighborhood that you enjoy… or what drew you to living in the Woodstone neighborhood?
A. Middleton Schools heavily influenced our search, but the youthful feel of the neighborhood sealed the deal. As we were originally looking for places to build, we would take evening drives through Woodstone and saw so many families out playing and enjoying the company of their neighbors. Also, Josh's sister and brother-in-law (Lacey and Greg Smith) live just around the corner from us (in another Heffron Home) and that might have influenced our decision to move in this direction.
Q. Were there any surprises of building a new home?
A. We were really taken back at how quick the home was built! From the day the foundation was poured, there seemed to be constant activity – to the point that we often found the crew putting in hours on Saturday and Sunday! Josh really liked the ability to work with Dan and Sam through the initial design phase and kept a close eye on the progress throughout the entire build. Questions were quickly handled by Dan or someone from the team and we always felt informed of what was occurring at the house.
Q. Are there particular features or design elements that you are happy were incorporated into your new home?
A. I LOVE my kitchen! I have always wanted a light, bright, and functional place to cook. With the main living room being shared to the kitchen, we can spend time with the family while preparing meals. Josh has always loved the craftsman style of home, so he worked with Dan to carry that feel and style throughout our home in some of the smaller details both inside and out.
Q. If you could offer advice about building, what would it be?
A. Take your time. We toured a number of houses – both existing and new construction – to really get a feel for the layout and features that we wanted. We kept a running list of details sorted in to “must have” and “nice to have” lists so we didn't forget anything along the way and also so that we could stick to our budget – and (so far) we haven't found anything that we missed! We also used a lot of online resources like Houzz and Pinterest as additional ways to get ideas for items to incorporate – who would think to put electrical outlets in the soffit for Christmas lights when they're planning July?! A good floor plan built in a great neighborhood sets the stage for a house to become the home that you will love for years to come – we're confident we achieved that and are really happy with our home!
Thank you so much, Katie and Josh... you have a beautiful home, and family! It is so nice to hear your story and the journey of building your new home. We wish you happiness there for many years to come.
