Rebecca & Kenyon
Q. Rebecca and Kenyon, where did you move from, and how did you end up in the Woodstone neighborhood?
A. We moved from Stone Crest Estates in Madison, across the road from Hawks’ Landing golf course. We always knew that we wanted to move our kids into the Middleton School District before middle school and when the mortgage rates plummeted this past spring we figured now was the time. We saw a Heffron home on the internet one Saturday night and we both fell in love with it. We had been looking for about a month prior to that with nothing striking our interest so when we saw the Heffron home, and we both loved it, we knew it was the one. I still remember being unable to sleep that night because I was so excited about it! I just kept flipping through the pictures over and over. We walked through the model the next morning on April 7th and a little over seven months later on November 15th we were closing on our own specially built home!
Q. How do you spend time with your family around the area?
Are you involved in the community?
A. We have 3 kids, ages 8, 6 and almost 4 so we are always on the lookout for kid friendly activities. The Overture Center has great kids programs on Saturday’s called “Kids in the Rotunda” that we all enjoy attending. They have acts that range from Yo-Yo masters to Irish dancing to African drummers. During the summer we like to go out to Governor Nelson state park to hike and swim. We also love to play and picnic at many of the wonderful community parks. Kenyon is involved in the community as a Cub Scout Leader and as the vice president of the board of the Montessori Children’s House, which is the preschool that our daughter attends. The school is such a great little community in itself, see more at www.madisonmontessori.org. It has really helped us feel connected to the area which is nice since Kenyon and I are both transplants here. I moved here from Illinois in 1999 and he moved here from Alabama in 2000.
Q. Could you explain what it is about the neighborhood that you enjoy… or what drew you to living in your particular neighborhood?
A. We like that Woodstone is in somewhat of a country setting yet very close to shopping, school, and work.
Q. Were there any surprises of building a new home?
A. It was surprising how fast the framing went up. One day there was a foundation and the next we had a house!
Q. If you could offer advice about building, what would it be?
A. Make sure you think through each room of the house and how it will be used before you finalize plans. We ended up removing the bathtub from the Master bathroom about two months into the build when we thought about the fact that we don’t usually take baths and that the space would be better utilized as a separate vanity. Had we decided to remove the tub earlier on we may have altered the layout a little bit as well. I’m super happy with how it turned out though and I’m utilizing every inch of my new personal vanity while Kenyon enjoys not having to look at my styling tools every morning.
Q. Are there particular features or design elements that you are happy were incorporated into your new home?
A. I purchased an old door at a flea market this past summer that I wanted to use as the barn door between the mudroom and the main living area. When I bought it I had no idea what dimensions the barn door needed to be I just knew this door was from Paris and I loved it! Jim and Robby (from Heffron Homes) put their carpentry skills to the test and made it work. We had it painted a gorgeous shade of turquoise that Jaclyn helped pick out and it turned out beautiful. It’s one of my favorite parts of the house!
I was also very happy with how the kid’s bathroom turned out! I wanted it to be fun but of course still be functional. Jaclyn helped pick out cabinetry that would fulfill the vision I had in mind and we worked together to find a budget friendly countertop that was white. I applied some fun decals to the cabinets and will craft some towel hooks in the future to personalize the room even more. The kids each enjoy having their own cabinet in the bathroom and having a lot more countertop space than in our old house. I’m thrilled with how it all came together!
Thank you Rebecca and Kenyon! You've done an amazing job planning for, and now living in, your beautiful home. We truly appreciate you sharing your story with us.
