Q. Where did you move from, and how did you end up in The Water’s Edge neighborhood on Lake Wisconsin?
A. We have lived in Sauk Prairie for 20 years - and we have enjoyed the lake as a part of a family cabin nearby. We really wanted to locate permanently to the lake after our kids entered college, which would be in a few years. We hadn't really thought of building right away, but we had some buyers interest and sold our current home, so we speeded up the plan and built right away. We never looked back.

Q. Were there any surprises when building a new home? Was there anything that you didn’t anticipate?
A. Tom has known both Dan Sr. and Dan, Jr. for several years. It was a pleasure to interact with both early in the process as we were trying to come up with the right home design. We had some initial ideas of what we wanted in our new home for both the short and long term. Dan Sr. had several creative ideas and Dan Jr. complemented him on their practicality and offered great suggestions also. When it came to the building process, Dan Jr. was very organized and kept us on pace. We never felt overwhelmed.
Q. Were there particular features or design elements that you were happy you added to your home?
A. We added the geothermal heating element to the home. It is very comfortable in the walkout basement area, and the savings on the heating bills are true! We had a swimming pool at our former home, in part to create a casual and welcoming atmosphere for our kid's friends, and since we're not empty nesters yet, wanted that to continue. The pool is a great gathering spot and we enjoy it a lot.

Q. Tell us how you and your kids are involved in the community.
A. Tom is an owner of a local insurance brokerage firm and Pat has been teaching for about 10 years. Tom is also on the Board of Directors at the local hospital and serves as a sports announcer for the high school teams. Our sons are in college and were involved in sports in high school. Our daughter, entering her junior year of high school, is involved in tennis, Show Choir and Dance.
Q. Your neighborhood is unique, as it is situated on a lake. Would you explain what it is about the neighborhood that you enjoy (or that drew you to living on the lake)?
A. Both Pat and Tom have only lived in town for our entire lives. When we had three small children, the in town lifestyle was great for transporting them to their numerous activities. But the lake living is truly relaxing, it was not an adjustment at all. The spectacular views never get dull. The boating is also fun, and we have been able to take advantage of the nice dining on the lake. We also bought a couple of kayaks.
Q. Obviously building a home is quite a process. Do you have advice for those who may be considering building a new home?
A. Be realistic of how you like to live. Use this as a base to how you want your home to work for you. Don't be afraid to try a few things and have them drawn out on paper.
Thank you Tom and Pat. What great insight into your experience. We appreciate your openness and willingness to share your story.
