Q. Have you been in the Sauk Prairie area for quite some time, even before moving? How do you spend time with your family around the area? Are you involved in the community?

A. We have lived in the Sauk Prairie area for about nine years total after settling here as a split commute for both of us to our jobs. With Braden now in school he is involved in a lot of activities so most of our free time is spent watching him participate in those activities. We like spending time outside as much as possible. With our larger yard you might find us playing a game of soccer, football, baseball, etc. or just taking a walk through the neighborhood. We also like to ride our bikes on the bike path along Highway 12.

Q. Were there any surprises of building and moving into a brand new home?

A. You hear the horror stories of people building a new house. We never encountered any of that! Dan was great to work with and helped us navigate the process smoothly. We spent a lot of time initially getting our plans just right but looking back that was time well spent. The only real surprise we had in the building process was a GREAT one. Soon after construction had started we found out we were pregnant! One of our first calls was to Dan so we could adjust our plans to accommodate another child. He was great about re-designing our plans within the framework of what had already been completed. The finished product actually turned out even better than our initial design! The whole building experience was great and something we would not hesitate to do again.

Q. Are there particular features or design elements that you are happy were incorporated into your new home?

A. We love our kitchen area. We decided on white cabinets in the kitchen with dark cabinets in the island. The countertop and backsplash just pulled it all together very nicely with the dark hardwood floor. The drop zone and the "lockers" have also been very useful. When we come into the house from the garage we have a place to drop coats, backpacks, diaper bags, shoes, cell phones, etc. before getting into the kitchen and main living areas. The last area we really have enjoyed this summer is the screened in porch. It has been really nice to have an outside area to go to where we don’t have to worry about the bugs (especially this year!). That is a big hit with Joy’s parents too. They almost sprint out there as soon as they enter our house. People ask us all the time if there is anything we would change about our home and we still can't think of anything.

Q. If you could offer advice about building, what would it be?

A. The first piece of advice is to not let those horror stories of building stop you from deciding to build. If you have a good builder, like Heffron Homes, the process is very smooth and you end up with a home exactly like you wanted it. The biggest advice we have it to do a lot of planning up front. It is impossible to spend too much time getting your plans just right. Go to model homes and open houses, look at floor plans online, keep a binder of ideas you like so you can incorporate those ideas into your home. Then create a list of "must-haves" and a list of "nice-to-haves" and spend time with your builder going over that list. Dan was great about incorporating our "must-haves" and most of our "nice-to-haves" while being respectful of the budget we set. Planning is going to keep your headaches to a minimum!

Thank You, Joy and Jeremy, for giving us a glimpse into your new home and building experience. Your home is beautiful, and so is your sweet family.
