Cabin in the Woods

Q. What brought you to your beautiful home site, and what made you decide that this is the place to build your new cabin?

A. We were drawn to Merrimac because our family already has a lake house right down the road, so the area has been part of our lives for years. We’ve always loved the feel of Merrimac, too! It has an “up north” charm and peacefulness, yet it’s only about 30 minutes from our primary home, which makes it so convenient. Lake Wisconsin is truly beautiful and offers so much for our family, especially during the summer months. We love fishing, tubing, boating, and simply being out on the water. Building here felt like a natural extension of the memories we’ve already been making in the area and a way to create even more for our own family.

Q. How do you enjoy life around the new area? Any favorite local spots, new traditions, or ways your family has gotten involved?

A. In the warmer months, we try to spend lots of time outdoors - boating, swimming, and fishing on Lake Wisconsin. In the winter, we love ice fishing or using the golf simulator in our cabin. We’ve also enjoyed supporting local spots in the area. Grabbing a burger at Ferry X-ing, ordering pizza from H’s Place, or heading to Tumbled Rock Brewery for a bite has quickly become part of our rhythm when we’re up there. Those simple traditions are already some of our favorite memories.

Q. What one thing you enjoy about having this second home?

A. It gives us a dedicated space to truly disconnect from everyday busyness. When we’re there, we’re more present with our family. There are fewer distractions and more family time. It already feels like a place where lifelong memories will be made.

Q. Were there any surprises about building a new home?

A. The biggest surprise was just how many decisions there are to make! Even with a clear vision, there are countless small details that require thought. It was definitely a learning process, but it also made us more intentional about how we wanted the space to feel and function.

Q. What was the most exciting or fun part of the building process?

A. Watching the home come together, from foundation to framing to the final finishing touches, was so exciting. Seeing something that began as simple drawings on paper and a wooded lot transform into a space we can now walk through, gather in, and create memories in has been such a rewarding experience.

Q. Are there particular features or design elements that you're happy you incorporated into your new home?

A. We’re especially happy with the open main living space (including the large island) as it really allows everyone to gather comfortably and makes the home feel inviting and connected. One feature we absolutely love is the ceiling beams in the main living area. They add so much character and warmth and give the space that cozy cabin feel we were hoping for. We’re also very glad we prioritized the number of bedrooms and designed each one with its own bathroom. Since we plan to host extended family often, having that privacy and convenience makes such a difference. It allows everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed, which was really important to us when designing the home.

Q. If you were giving advice to a friend before they built their new home, what would you tell them?

A. Be clear on your priorities early and enjoy the journey! There will always be decisions and trade-offs, so having a clear vision and set of priorities helps. Visit the site to see progress often! Also, trust your team and again, enjoy the process. It’s a big undertaking, but it’s also special to create something that will hold so many memories.
