HOMEOWNER SPOTLIGHT

Marisa & Brandon

Yahara River / Lake Mendota

Q. What brought you to your beautiful home site on the Yahara River/Lake Mendota, and what made you decide that this is the place to build your new home?

A. Brandon grew up on a lake, so we’ve been passively looking at lakes and lakehouses since we were married ten years ago. We had been eying properties on this particular inlet on Mendota, so when we saw a home go for sale, we sprung into action!

Q. How do you enjoy life around the new area? Any favorite local spots, traditions, or ways your family has gotten involved?

A. The biggest draw to this area is the lake. We’ve had fun jet skiing, kayaking, boating and fishing. We discovered a sweet nature/wetlands trail behind our neighborhood. We’re also loving exploring the restaurant scene downtown, and now we are equidistant to Sun Prairie and West Madison so we are exploring eastwards as well.

Q. What's one thing that you enjoy about having a home on the water (or something you may not have expected)?

A. One thing I never expected is how much our son loves fishing now! He has made friends in the neighborhood and the gang will fish for hours and hours. Another surprise was how well we (Brandon and Marisa) got along during the build process. We’ve heard anecdotes that building a home can be tough on a relationship. Working with the team made the design process well-organized, supportive and fun. The designers and the subcontractors were great as well! We loved H&R Carpets and Landscaping Arts in particular and highly recommend them to other clients.

Q. Were there any surprises about building a new home?

A. Yes, how much we loved visiting everyday and seeing what had changed. We especially loved watching the initial demolition! We also appreciated how easy Dan made it to make minor changes during the framing process. Dan and his team were on-time and take a lot of pride in their work - it showed throughout the building process.

Q. Are there particular features or design elements that you are happy were incorporated into your new home?

A. The windows are large and face the best views. We love the deck off the primary bedroom in addition to the main wraparound deck. The kitchen is beautiful, efficient and has become our primary family gathering space. Dan had the idea to customize a steel post for our deck so we wouldn’t have an issue with a larger wooden post blocking the views, which we really appreciated!

Q. What was the most exciting, or fun, part of the home building process?

A. Marisa loved the interior design process. We had fun seeing the daily changes as our home was built. We also enjoyed the lake - kayaking, jet skiing, and ice skating in winter - regularly while the build process was happening!
